Same rules.
Same solidarity.

In 2022 Football Tasmania gave a match day's gate to people hurt by the war in Ukraine. In October 2026 it handed Team Palestine a 3–0 forfeit over a shirt slogan. Ask Football Tasmania to hold a humanitarian fundraiser for Palestinian civilians, and to explain how its rules are applied.

The two fixtures

One precedent, one forfeit

“Football Family Stands with Ukraine”

At the Summer Cup, Football Tasmania joined a “No to War” message and donated the gate to people affected by the conflict, raising more than $3,000. Football Australia said Australian football “stands together as a community in support of the Ukrainian people.”

Team Palestine forfeits at Aurora Stadium

Football Tasmania directed Team Palestine to remove “From the River to the Sea” from the back of its shirts. The team refused, and its 3.30pm game against the Dutchies was awarded 3–0 to the Dutchies. CEO Tony Pignata said Palestinian national shirts are welcome and the problem is the slogan. Players say the rule is vague and not applied consistently.

The shirt rule usually cited is Law 4 of the FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game, which restricts political, religious and personal slogans on playing equipment. Law 4 does not itself set a forfeit, so the penalty must come from competition or disciplinary regulations Football Tasmania has not yet named.

This letter does not ask Football Tasmania to drop its rules. It asks the organisation to show its humanitarian support is consistent, by doing for Palestinian civilians what it did for Ukrainians.

What the letter asks

Three questions

  1. Will Football Tasmania organise or support a Palestinian humanitarian fundraiser comparable to the 2022 Ukraine event? If not, why not?
  2. What precise rule was used to prohibit the slogan on Team Palestine’s shirts, and how is it applied to comparable political, social, religious or national expressions?
  3. How does Football Tasmania distinguish prohibited political expression from permitted humanitarian advocacy, fundraising and public solidarity?
